Toronto, Ontario — Discover the latest insights into SUV safety with the recent report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
According to the IIHS, among popular SUV models, only the Jeep Wagoneer qualifies for the prestigious 2024 Top Safety Pick award. This accolade sets the Wagoneer apart from competitors like the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Ford Expedition, which fell short in various safety assessments, particularly in the small overlap front crash test.
The IIHS noted that while SUVs like the Tahoe and Expedition excel in hauling people and towing, they lack adequate protection for backseat passengers, a deficiency that prevents them from achieving higher safety ratings.
In the case of the Ford Expedition, its marginal rating was marred by failures in both driver and passenger side tests. Issues included partial detachment of the steering column and separation of the A-pillar from the rocker panel.
On the other hand, the Chevrolet Tahoe, with an acceptable rating, demonstrated proper functioning of airbags and restraints, ensuring survival space for the driver. However, concerns remain regarding the risk of lower leg injuries.
IIHS President David Harkey highlighted the trade-off between the mass of large SUVs, which provides some protection in collisions with smaller vehicles, and the increased damage they pose to other road users and fixed obstacles.
